Togatta Onsen is located at the base of Mt. Zao in Miyagi Prefecture in the highlands at an altitude of 330 meters.
The hot springs is famous for having a 400-year history said to be good for the legs and back.
You can enjoy a stroll here in the town of Togatta Onsen as they have communal baths, souvenir shops and kokeshi studios.
The kokeshi bridge welcomes you at the entrance of Togatta Onsen
It is about 30 minutes from JR Shiroishi-Zao Station by car to Togatta Onsen.
At the entrance of Togatta Onsen town, there is a branch of Shiroishi River, Matsukawa flowing and over this river is a bridge with a charming, giant kokeshi doll handrail and is called as the "Kokeshi Bridge".
On both sides of the bridge are 4 kokeshi dolls and greet all those who come and go to the hot springs.
The view from the bridge of the Zao Mountain Range and Matsukawa is splendid!
You can spot many kokeshi motifs everywhere!
The communal bath, Kaminoyu is a symbol of the town!
Kaminoyu is a quaint, wooden communal bath and is a symbol of Togatta Onsen.
The reddish-brown water that continues to flow from the source has a smooth texture. They have a warm and hot bath.
They luxuriously use Aomori cypress and the bathroom is filled with the gentle scent.
There are no shampoo and soap so make sure to bring your own along with towels. (You can even purchase them here).
This bath is located in the center of the town and is crowded with locals and tourists.
The water soaks well on your skin and will warm you up from the inside of your body!
