The “Shiogama Wholesale Market” in Shiogama, Miyagi Prefecture, boasts the largest selection of produce in the whole of the Far East!
This is a wholesale market that caters to professional (food industry) customers and lay-people alike, where it is possible to eat fresh seafood grilled on the spot in the “free grilling oven”, or make your own original seafood rice bowl at “My Seafood Rice Bowl”. ♪
Why not come and enjoy the seasonal seafood, freshly fished from the Sanriku seas?
Shopping for beautiful seafood is actually a great pleasure!
I tried a little shopping in order to create my own seafood rice bowl.
Here, a scallop timidly opens its shell and takes a peep at the outside world.
When I turned my camera on them, they shyly closed their shells.
Shy, aren’t you? ♡
Shy scallops (Large, 600 Yen)
Sparkly salmon roe (Small pack, 900 Yen)
Magnificent button shrimp (about 300 Yen per tail)
And of course the star of the show is fresh tuna!
Shiogama Port boasts some of the largest volume catches of fresh, raw tuna in all of Japan.
The star of the show is still tuna!
Bigeye tuna is the principle type, used locally and in sushi shops, and shipped nationwide.
Also, among the more eye-catching bigeye tuna preparations coveted by connoisseurs, are the “Sanriku salt-cured” tuna, caught between September and December each year, and prepared as branded products!
Freshly prepared tuna flesh.
You can buy bigeye tuna from kind Mr. Matsuoka in his shop!
